Exclusive Wine Cruise MELODIES OF THE DANUBE NOVEMBER 13-20, 2017

graveyard

Hosted by Rob & Paula Campbell-Taylor, Owners
Graveyard Vineyards, San Miguel, CA

Don’t let the name Graveyard Vineyards fool you. This highly acclaimed California winery began from a dream that owners, Rob and Paula had of owning property in the country to raise their two young sons. After searching the California coast, they discovered an 81-acre property on the top of a hill past a little country graveyard dating back to 1865. The property had everything on their list of “must haves” including an existing vineyard. The biggest find though came soon after when they discovered and hired their winemaker, Jason Bushong. What started with 184 case bottling in 2006 is now an award-winning winery and tasting room with direct to consumer sales of 5,000 cases per year to a wine club of over 2,000 people. Join them as they lead you along the wonderful Wachau Valley.

Q&A With Rob & Paula Campbell-Taylor

Why are you the right wine host for this cruise? Share your credentials and passion for wine.

Paula: First of all, we love drinking wine and that’s how our wine journey began.
Rob: But even before starting the winery we’ve always enjoyed hosting parties and events. The things we enjoy most about the wine business is meeting people and establishing the relationships that this life style affords. Our winery life revolves around these events and hosting this wine cruise is a natural extension of this.

How do you stand out from our other incredible wine hosts?

Paula: Fun adventurous spirit and have done our share of traveling the world.
Rob: We pack a lot of fun into everything we do.

How did you first fall in love with wine?

Paula: It was discovering White Zinfandel at the age of 21 and bought my first case of wine. I thought I had found Nirvana. Haven’t we all started like that? It was all uphill from there!
Rob: It was when I sold our first harvest of grapes to Brian Talley who is the owner of an extremely influential winery on California’s Central Coast. The moment was like, “Wow we might just make this work”!

What are you most looking forward to on your river cruise?

Paula: Laughter, friendships, no dieting and the visual beauty of our world while drinking delicious wine!
Rob: I look forward to discovering “old world” wines and drinking them along with the “new world” wines that we will bring with us in a gorgeous setting with our friends both new and old.

What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to?

Paula: Ephesus, Turkey; Civita, Italy; Santorini, Greece; Zermatt, Switzerland.
Rob: The Galapagos Islands are the epitome of interesting and adventurous and wonderful respite from the normal tourist destination.

If you were stranded along on a desert island and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?

Paula: Thinking that it would be hot since it’s a desert island and I could only have 1 bottle, it would be a Nebuchadnezzar sized bottle of crisp sauvignon blanc with hints of grapefruit & apricot with a clean light finish. Gee, that sounds like a Graveyard Vineyards wine!
Rob: You better take some ice with you. If I really were stranded on a desert island with only one bottle I would pick something in a clear Claret bottle with a cork closure so that it would be easy to see the “HELP” note I put inside.

Whether you have a seasoned appreciation for fine wine, or simply indulge in a sip here and there, this is a wonderful way to uncork the traditions of the local culture and learn about the region you’re visiting.

About the Wine Region – Wachau Valley

Brilliant architectural masterpieces and vine-strung hillsides on the Danube River have inspired artistic creations for hundreds of years. The Melodies of the Danube journeys through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, so you can experience some of the most celebrated wines and sights in Europe’s heartland.

Over 3,700 acres of terraced vineyards rise from Austria’s illustrious Wachau Valley. Located between the towns of Melk and Krems, this cooler-climate wine region brings a wide variety of refreshing, peppery white-grape wines to fruition. Grüner Veltliner is considered to be the most important grape in Austria. Grown in loess soils by the river’s edge, these favored wines offer aromatic stone fruit flavors reminiscent of the terroir. Riesling, the second most popular grape, loves rocky inclines, so it is extensively sewn into the rich hillside. Fruity notes and floral scents surface from these unique whites.
