Q&A With Peter Marks

Why do you believe you are the right wine host for this cruise? Share your credentials and passion for wine.

I love wine! I love the stories behind those who make wine, the culture and history of where wine comes from, and of course the unique flavors and tastes of wine and how wine makes a meal so much more enjoyable. I graduated from UC Davis (the “wine school” as many would say) with a BS in Food Service Management, but I took several upper division courses in grape growing and winemaking that piqued my interest in wine. Upon graduation, I worked in restaurants and food hospitality for 5 years, where I learned more about the magic of wine and food, so much so that I changed careers and began working in the wine industry, first as a retailer for 21 years and now a wine educator for 16 years. I’m also lucky to be a Master of Wine, having passed this arduous exam in 1995. What the MW has taught me is, wine can never truly be mastered; there is always more to know and things change constantly. It’s difficult to grasp everything about wine, but if you relax and enjoy the journey, you’ll have a lot of fun, meet some wonderful people, and eat and drink very well!

Tell us about yourself and your passion for wine!

For my entire career, I’ve attempted to demystify wine. I don’t take wine or myself too seriously. I enjoy meeting people and exploring new places. We can all learn so much from each other. For me, the greatest satisfaction I’ve received from traveling with AmaWaterways is meeting new friends and sharing great stories and wine together.

How did you first fall in love with wine?

Hard to say there was one defining moment, but I do remember the first wine that really caught my attention and made me want to know more about wine. It was a Louis Martini Gewürztraminer. I couldn’t believe a wine could taste so good, and have so many unique flavors! It was the first case of wine that I purchased, and I served it with everything. Most of the time it tasted fantastic no matter what I served it with, however I don’t recommend it with a pizza and EVERYTHING on it!

What are you most looking forward to on your river cruise?

Believe it or not, I’ve never been to Austria and Hungary. I’ve read a lot about them and their wines, but I can’t wait to experience it in person. And of course, to meet and share delicious wines with new friends.

What is something fun/unique you wish to share?

I consider myself a spiritual person. I believe we were all put here for a reason. It’s up to us to decide if we want to fulfill that purpose. I also love to bike ride. That’s another reason why I love AmaWaterways. You’ll see me on all the bike tours, rain or shine.

What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to?

Now that’s a tough question! I’d have to say Provence because I’ve spent the most time there. That has allowed me to experience the people and their culture more fully. Plus, the wines from Provence are delicious and affordable!

If you were stranded along on a desert island and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?

It would be a Champagne, Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Françaises, which is a very rare wine made only in special years using techniques that date back to the 19th century. You’ll have to join me on the Romantic Danube cruise to find out why!

Expertly Curated WINE EXPERIENCES

Immerse yourself in the many flavors of Europe on one of AmaWaterways unique Wine Cruises, which let you add a unique, epicurean dimension to one of our European itineraries. Like our standard river cruises, guests have the opportunity to join tours that highlight the famous sights in each port of call. These special itineraries, however, offer guests a perfect blend of wine-related experiences and excursions in grand capitals and charming towns. You’ll taste local cuisine, discover how wine is made and, of course, partake in tastings — all at no additional cost. Whether you have a seasoned appreciation for fine wine, or simply indulge in a sip here and there, this is a wonderful way to uncork the traditions of the local culture and learn about the region you’re visiting.

About the Wine Region – Wachau Valley

Brilliant architectural masterpieces and vine-strung hillsides on the Danube River have inspired artistic creations for hundreds of years. The Romantic Danube journeys through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, so you can experience some of the most celebrated wines and sights in Europe’s heartland.

Over 3,700 acres of terraced vineyards rise from Austria’s illustrious Wachau Valley. Located between the towns of Melk and Krems, this cooler-climate wine region brings a wide variety of refreshing, peppery white-grape wines to fruition. Grüner Veltliner is considered to be the most important grape in Austria. Grown in loess soils by the river’s edge, these favored wines offer aromatic stone fruit flavors reminiscent of the terroir. Riesling, the second most popular grape, loves rocky inclines, so it is extensively sewn into the rich hillside. Fruity notes and floral scents surface from these unique whites.
