Exclusive Wine Cruise ROMANTIC DANUBE NOVEMBER 6-13, 2017

Vezzetti

Hosted by L. Paul Vezzetti II, Co-Owner & Winemaker
The Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey, Middletown, PA

Carving out a niche for signature white wines in an unconventional wine region can be tough, but Mr. Vezzetti has done just that. His wine philosophy revolves around handcrafting approachable vintages that focus on aromatics and balance. Since opening, The Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey has been committed to experiential interactions with wine, and more recently, craft beer and cider. Every sip is an opportunity to discover what’s new, and rediscover some of the long-lost favorites, and underneath that experience, a knowledgeable and trusted guide to take you on the journey. An added bonus, Mr. Vezzetti is an experienced chef, having made numerous guest appearances at local establishments for one-time-only wine pairings.

Q&A With L. Paul Vezzetti

Why are you the right wine host for this cruise? Share your credentials and passion for wine.

As a young winemaker from a non-traditional wine region, I have to say I’ve encountered some of the most challenging winemaking there is. European winemaking is steeped in tradition, with many producers having century-old stylist preferences. My background, will allow for a truly unique point/counterpoint presentation of these wines, mixing respectful reinvention, with the traditional.

Tell us about yourself and your passion for wine!

Who doesn’t want to travel with a winemaker who moonlights as a professional photographer/videographer? If I see a single guest carrying a $2,000 DSLR only to have it set on automatic mode, we’re going to have a photography 101 class ON. THE. SPOT. It is my personal mission to not only ensure that you’re finding perfection in wine, but that you have the perfect pictures to show to your friends and family back home...

How do you stand out from our other incredible wine hosts?

I began my wine journey sampling basement home-brew as a youngster in a heavily Italian outlying steel town outside of Pittsburgh. Despite this, I somehow developed a taste over the years for, of all things, big & over-the-top Chardonnays (that are becoming more and more difficult to find). I’m also a fan of the elegance of light floral white wines; i.e. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, etc.

How did you first fall in love with wine?

I’ve always been a fan of the Wachau Valley’s rich expertise in producing white wine. They’re famous for the production of some of my favorite varieties: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, etc. I’m most looking forward to seeing if I can be surprised by any of their red wines, like Spatburgunder and Blaufrankisch.

What are you most looking forward to on your river cruise?

I happen to be something of an amateur historian on the topic of the sinking the R.M.S. Titanic. Perhaps it’s tempting fate to mention that in relation to embarking upon a cruise, but at least we’ll all be prepared.

What is one of the most interesting places you have traveled to?

My wife and I are avid Scuba Divers and some of the most interesting places I’ve been involve me being 120 feet underwater crawling through holes in 100 year old fishing trawlers, derelict naval vessels, or merchant ships...

If you were stranded along on a desert island and could only have one bottle of wine, what would it be and why?

Since I’m stranded and alone, I’d probably want a port or a Madeira. As fortified wines, there is an element of medicinal value should the need arise, and they’d be less likely to spoil in the climate.

Expertly Curated WINE EXPERIENCES

Immerse yourself in the many flavors of Europe on one of AmaWaterways unique Wine Cruises, which let you add a unique, epicurean dimension to one of our European itineraries. Like our standard river cruises, guests have the opportunity to join tours that highlight the famous sights in each port of call. These special itineraries, however, offer guests a perfect blend of wine-related experiences and excursions in grand capitals and charming towns. You’ll taste local cuisine, discover how wine is made and, of course, partake in tastings — all at no additional cost. Whether you have a seasoned appreciation for fine wine, or simply indulge in a sip here and there, this is a wonderful way to uncork the traditions of the local culture and learn about the region you’re visiting.

About the Wine Region – Wachau Valley

Brilliant architectural masterpieces and vine-strung hillsides on the Danube River have inspired artistic creations for hundreds of years. The Romantic Danube journeys through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, so you can experience some of the most celebrated wines and sights in Europe’s heartland.

Over 3,700 acres of terraced vineyards rise from Austria’s illustrious Wachau Valley. Located between the towns of Melk and Krems, this cooler-climate wine region brings a wide variety of refreshing, peppery white-grape wines to fruition. Grüner Veltliner is considered to be the most important grape in Austria. Grown in loess soils by the river’s edge, these favored wines offer aromatic stone fruit flavors reminiscent of the terroir. Riesling, the second most popular grape, loves rocky inclines, so it is extensively sewn into the rich hillside. Fruity notes and floral scents surface from these unique whites.
